Individual Therapy for Shock and Trauma
Therapy with me is for adults who feel changed by a sudden or overwhelming experience. You may feel more reactive, more shut down, or unsure why certain situations still affect you. You may tell yourself it wasn’t that serious, but your body feels different.
Our work focuses on helping your nervous system feel safer and more steady again.
What sessions are like
Sessions are integrative and paced carefully. Depending on what feels most helpful, we may work through conversation, body awareness, or creative methods. The focus is not only on understanding what happened, but on how your body is holding it now.
We move slowly. Nothing is forced. You remain in control throughout.
How we might work
Talking and meaning-making
Sometimes it helps to speak about what happened and explore the patterns or reactions that followed. Understanding can bring relief and clarity.
Working with the body
Shock and trauma often live in the nervous system. We may notice tension, bracing, numbness, or surges of activation, and gently support the body to settle at a pace that feels manageable.
This approach is informed by Somatic Experiencing and body psychotherapy.
Creative or non-verbal work
When words feel limited or overwhelming, creative methods can help access and process experiences that are difficult to describe. No artistic skill is needed.
This work may be helpful if
- You’ve experienced an accident, medical scare, assault, or sudden shock
- You feel more on edge or more shut down since something happened
- You avoid certain situations because they feel unsafe or overwhelming
- You feel stuck in freeze or hypervigilance
- You want a body-based approach, not just talking therapy
Over time, you may notice
- Your body settles more easily
- You are less startled or reactive
- You feel steadier in situations that used to overwhelm you
- Emotions feel clearer, not as consuming
- You feel more like yourself again
